University Affiliate Benefits & Services

Council of Environmental Deans and Directors

A premier benefit of University Affiliate membership is representation on the NCSE's Council of Environmental Deans and Directors (CEDD). Launched in 2001, CEDD currently includes leading environmental faculty from over 150 affiliate institutions representing academic environmental programs of all sizes and types. CEDD provides leadership in program management, curriculum advancement, career preparation, and interdisciplinary scholarship. The President/ Chancellor of each University Affiliate school is invited to designate a representative to serve on CEDD.

Participation in Multi-Institutional Collaborations to Secure Funding

NCSE is a leading voice at the national leval in support of extramural funding and assists affiliate insitutions in competing for these resources. In 2009, NCSE partnered with 20 member schools on our Climate Change Education Initiative and was successfully awarded over $2 million in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Access to Information on Environmental R&D and Education Funding

Through NCSE events, faculty and senior administrators at affiliate institutions have the opportunity to engage with federal officials in the Obama administration regarding their agencies' priorities, funding opportunities, and new initiatives of direct relevance to environmental and energy research and education at their schools.

University Affiliate schools also receive exclusive access to NCSE's online Handbook of Federal Funding for Environmental R&D. The handbook covers a broad range of federal agencies and offices, describing how each office engages in environmental research and highlighting opportunities for universities to access over $9 billion in federal funding for extramural research.

National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment

NCSE annually convenes a national conference that brings together academic, government, business, scientific, and civil society leaders to address a critical environmental challenge. Our 11th National Conference on Science Policy and the Environment: "Our Changing Oceans", will be held January 19-21, 2010 in Washington, D.C. University Affiliate schools receive complimentary conference registrations for up to five faculty members and students (depending on school size).

Campus-wide Subscription to Environment and Energy Publications

NCSE provides member schools with a complimentary, campus-wide subscription to premier online publications by Environment & Energy (E&E) Publishing - Environment & Energy Daily, Greenwire, Land Letter and Environment & Energy News PM. These resources are useful to faculty in course preparation, to students in their classwork and policy research, and to administrators by keeping them informed of today's major issues. The service is valued at up to $4,000.

Campus to Careers (C2C) Program

NCSE's new Campus to Careers (C2C) program supports young professionals in their first steps towards a career in the environment. C2C provides paid environmental internship opportunities for students and recent graduates at federal agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations nationwide. Positions range from field and lab research to policy analysis and education. Candidates from University Affiliate schools receive preference in the application and placement process.

New Analysis Service for Interdisciplinary Environmental Programs

NCSE is now offering a valuable, new customized analysis service to assess individual environmental degree programs based on the findings of the  Curriculum Study. The study, which was commissioned by NCSE and CEDD, is the first comprehensive research on environmental programs nationwide including over 343 degree programs on 260 campuses. A new report, Interdisciplinary Environmental Education on the Nation’s Campuses, has been developed based on the findings. It explores the knowledge and skills components of programs, how programs are organized administratively, and how programs are variously oriented toward science, management or policy.
